Featured Graphics: Bright Spot in the Pandemic! “Heroes’ Exit” Mural at Dell Children’s Hospital

Dell Children’s Medical Center has a new addition – a Heroes’ Exit! Ready for a great story? You may have heard of Owen Coulter, a 5 year old boy who went to Dell Children’s Medical in December of 2019 and had a miraculous journey that included a life-saving experience by staff upon his arrival. Owen’s father is a firefighter in Austin. As Owen left the hospital after a 56 day stay, there was a “superhero” departure celebration with dozens of firefighters, police officers, 18 fire trucks, balloons, t-shirts, and even a few costumed super-heroes. The experience was wonderful for everyone there, but especially the hero being celebrated, Owen.

Days later a Dell Medical Children’s Medical Center Foundation board member dropped by the office of Susan Hewlitt (executive director of the foundation). The board member, Marcella Maxwell (who also works at Dell Children’s) said that she couldn’t stop thinking about the wonderful exit Owen had. “How can we have every child feel like a hero when they leave?” she thought out loud. They quickly began brainstorming and walking the hospital for ideas.

At the entryway of the hospital is the HEB Auditorium, which happens to be a perfect passageway and private exit for the kids. Susan immediately went to this spot and an idea came to her for a “hero’s exit” – what if they had a mural here and kids could take pictures as they were released to go home? The idea was positively received by the foundation board, and Susan could not have been more pleased with their unanimous agreement to support the project. The next question was who the artist would be – Susan knew that Becca Borrelli would be perfect!

Becca had designed a coloring book for the kids at Dell Children’s. Becca is an illustrator and has a background in teaching. For Becca this was the perfect project- it combined her love of children with her passion for design. Becca began to weave a compilation of happy imagery from areas in the hospital, making the final memories in the hospital a way to remember Dell Children’s in a positive way.

The final product is a brightly colored mural printed on DreamScape wallpaper. Images include a StarFlight helicopter, the stone water wall from the courtyard, a replication of the donor butterfly wall, and spotlights on art found in the hospital such as the art by Graciela Boulanger gracing the bridge in the lobby as well as the blue dog featured in a George Rodrigue piece found in the hospital.

Becca contacted Miller after having printed with us before. The experience was pleasant for Becca and it was easy to communicate with Destenie (Customer Sales and Service Rep) from the beginning. Becca had been contracted to paint the mural on the wall, but had worked with DreamScape in another hospital setting and knew that it holds up to cleaning and is long-lasting. “DreamScape was the perfect solution we didn’t know we needed, especially with how clean we have to keep it,” said Susan Hewitt.

As the final joyful touch to this fulfilling project, note that it was accomplished during COVID! Installing the piece during this difficult time made it an even happier win!

Featured Graphics: Patika Coffee & Superthing Coffee

We are thrilled that we were called on to print signage for Patika coffee on South Lamar.  We produced their safety guidelines and temporary outdoor menu on coroplast and aluminum which make for a durable duo. The folks over at Patika cleverly hung their signage with removable hangers, making sure the signs were secure and weatherproof.

Located at 2159 South Lamar, Patika is open for online and in-person orders. They have plenty of parking at the back of the building and space to wait for your order while maintaining distance from employees and other customers.

We also helped Patika’s sister company, Superthing Coffee, develop contour cut coffee stickers as well as business cards, which created a distinct look for their coffee bags and branding. Superthing is roasted locally and served at Patika as well as Mañana, Brew and Brew, Olamaie, Creature Coffee and a few other places. Featured Graphics: Austin FC Honors St. David’s Healthcare Workers

In conjunction with National Nurse’s Week and National Hospital Week, Austin FC and Founding Partner St. David’s HealthCare teamed up to honor front line healthcare workers with yard signs that read ‘A St. David’s HealthCare Hero Lives Here”. Austin FC is proud to join St. David’s HealthCare to show appreciation for all the Health Care Heroes keeping Austin safe.

 

 

We were lucky enough to be the folks that printed the yard signs for Austin FC – we love working with their phenomenal team and were especially excited to join forces on this project, honoring healthcare workers. What a nice way to say thanks!

Also included is a look at how the Austin FC Stadium is moving along as construction is underway with Austin Commercial as the General Contractor. Located within a mile of our store, we love to see the progress on this Austin Dream in the making! Go Austin FC!

Featured Graphics: Emily Eisenhart & Madewell 

Our graphics feature this month has a different spin … not an installation we printed and installed, but a project we helped with behind the scenes. This month’s featured artist, Emily Eisenhart, came to Dana Burton, our fine art specialist, with a unique request. Madewell, a popular women’s clothing company, had commissioned Eisenhart to design a wall mural announcing one of their stores in Brooklyn. The sign painters at Colossal Media, who were mixing the paint and matching colors by eye, needed color-perfect to-scale print proofs. Dana was tasked with finding the printed colors to match the digital colors.

 

Dana’s good eye for color, along with concentration and patience, allowed her to get a perfect match for each color – and there were more than 20! The resulting printed piece netted a color proof that the painters could use to mix the right colors for the mural spanning 145’ long by 25’ tall!

Featured Graphics: Riverbat Paddle Battle

April 6th marked the date for the first annual Riverbat Paddle Battle, benefitting the Austin Community College (ACC) Foundation and hosted by American Constructors. The purpose of the ACC Foundation is to develop community support for the college by raising funds to meet the growing needs of the ACC students. The Foundation provides scholarships ($1,000,000 granted in 2018), funds for equipment used to train students, and funding for relevant student support positions not covered by the ACC budget. 

The first annual scholarship fund raising event Riverbat Paddle Battle kayak race took place on April 6 at Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. The money raised went towards funding scholarships for ACC students and took place at the Rowing Dock.

The ACC Foundation and American Constructors appreciate the support of the sponsors and participants alike, who made year one of the event a success. Not even the weather could slow the enthusiasm of the group! 72 people participated on the water, with nearly 200 showing up for the after-party across the street for crawfish, grilled cheese sandwiches, and tasty libations. Photos from event and winners of the paddle battle can be found (here). For being the first year, the Riverbat Paddle Battle is off to a tremendous start!

 

                                    

And as a side note, did you know that the mascot for Austin Community College is the RiverBat? Quite appropriate here in Austin, don’t you think?

Featured Graphics: Raise Your Hand Texas

This past February, alumni teachers, administrators, and influencers in education came together in Austin to raise their voices by sharing ideas to look beyond the status-quo and guide the reinvention of public education in the State of Texas. At their Leadership Symposium this year, Raise Your Hand Texas looked to push its marketing and event materials to the next level through its interactive displays, banners, easel signs, directional signage, as well as a 20’ stage backdrop and 20’ experience wall.

The nonprofit advocacy group supports public policy solutions that “invests in our students, encourage[s] innovation and autonomy, and improve[s] college and workforce readiness.” This year, for their 11thannual Leadership Symposium, Raise Your Hand unveiled the theme “Raise Your Voice.” The three-day interactive event emphasized being heard both on their campuses as well as at the capitol throughout the symposium. More than 300 educators from the event converged on the Capitol to speak directly to their legislators, to make their voices, the voices of their teachers, and the voices of their students and families heard.

From a marketing perspective, Raise Your Hand always takes the Leadership Symposium experience to the next level. The small but talented team looks for ways to push the creative envelope when it comes to presenting the symposium, and the organization. Unique to this year, they partnered with the third-party app Soundwave Art to “enhance the overall experience and bring life to many of our print materials.” They generated 16 soundwaves that were all scannable and featured their own custom-created videos that shared stories of the many voices behind public education.

The print materials highlighted the theme of the symposium and amplified the overall experience through bright colors and eye-catching designs and innovative signage. Miller provided printing of several of the necessities for a symposium of this size—from the direct-to-print directional signage for the conference space itself, to a 20’ Hop-Up that gave a backdrop to presenters and acted as a background for selfies later during the symposium. Miller can provide fun and informational needs for any event. The interactive aspect of the Soundwave Art App elevated the reach of the marketing of the symposium. It allowed Raise Your Hand to push their message further and provide opportunities for educators and administrators attending the event to interact with the content.

Featured Graphics: 2019 SMPS Black + White Bash

The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) hosted their annual Black + White Bash at the Austin Film Society on January 17th. Over 200 people attended the Old Hollywood themed event and celebrated the winners of the SMPS Member of the Year (Janki Depalma), Community Service Award (Tahnee Sauer), and Leadership Award (Paulette Gibbins). Miller IDS not only had the honor of printing all the signage for the event, but several of our employees had the opportunity to plan and attend.

The Black + White Bash is SMPS’ event of the year and highlights the hard work, leadership and community development of their members. This year’s event space, a cinema, provided a few challenges for the planning committee including not being able to hang anything on the wall. Miller and the SMPS committee worked to find a unique way to display sponsors, food, and awards. 

Our sales and marketing associate, Lauren Bastiaans, along with our account manager Ryan Bruce worked with the committee utilized the open floor space to create the Old Hollywood theme here in Austin. To present and show off past winners of each award, Miller printed floor decals in the shape of the classic Hollywood stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The 2019 award winner names were covered as guests entered the hall and the names were revealed during the awards portion of the night.

The committee also decided to use gobos (a stencil or template placed inside or in front of a light source and projected) to project the event sponsors onto a wall and Miller printed large customized foamboard signs to cover around the gobo areas to act as a border around the devices. In addition, Miller also printed smaller foamboards to highlight the entertainment, award, walk of fame, photobooth, food and drink, and print sponsors. The piece de resistance (and our favorite), however, was the 8’x24’ hop up that featured the custom designed Hollywood sign-inspired SMPS Austin banner in the VIP area of the bash!

 We are grateful to have worked with SMPS for the last six years as an in-kind print sponsor. Be it luncheons to the Black + White bash, we’ve enjoyed planning, printing, and being able to interact with some of the brightest and forward thinking marketing professionals in Austin and the A/E/C industry.   A special thank you to Rachel Paul Photography for the great pictures throughout the night!

 

Featured Graphics: Easy Tiger at The Linc

     It’s here—the wait is finally over! Easy Tiger officially opened its highly anticipated North Austin bakery and beer garden at The Linc (6406 North Interstate 35 Frontage Road Suite 1100) this past Saturday, December 8th, 2018.  Much larger than its 6th Street sister, their Linc location has an increased amount of space for delicious food, an incredible selection of drinks, and fun on an even greater scale.

We are especially excited to have provided and installed custom printed wallpaper for the bakery and beer garden. Miller IDS worked with both Easy Tiger, interior designer Veronica Koltuniak of VeroKolt, and LAND Design Studio to color match the wallpaper design and bring the namesake tigers to life.

If the bakery and craft beer offerings are anything close to the other locations (6th St, Fareground, and Whole Foods 365 in Cedar Park), this latest one is sure to be an extra-popular addition to our city. Our Metric Location especially is looking forward to having a fun, family-accessible space to eat delicious hot pretzels and beer cheese or to pick up a delicious baguette.

The Linc location will serve the specialties Easy Tiger is known for including specialty breads, sandwiches, sausages, and a great variety of beers and whiskeys. Additionally, the space offers great parking and will begin offering brunch December 15th and will eventually boast drive-thru services and live music. As you can see, the interior is open with windows for looking into the bread and charcuterie makings that give Easy Tiger its well-deserved fame. The bake shop is now open from 7AM to midnight on Sunday through Wednesday and until 2AM Thursday through Saturday, while the beer garden is open 11AM to close Monday through Friday and 10AM to close Saturday and Sunday.

Fast Times at F1: Signage for Sabre Commercial

Earlier this year, Miller IDS highlighted and celebrated Sabre Commercial’s 10-year anniversary as a leader in the Austin commercial construction industry. Sabre is a company founded on collaborations with the best local industry talent, setting the bar high for quality work, running safe job sites, and maintaining ethical business practices. Sabre focuses on engagement within the communities it serves in San Marcos and Austin, an approach taken this past month at the Circuit of the America’s Formula 1 event. Miller IDS has worked with Sabre throughout its 10 years in business, and today working on everything from construction documents to large-scale job site signage and marketing materials. At Miller, we’ve loved working with Sabre from concept to completion on their Formula 1 tent signage.

For the fourth year in a row, Miller designed and printed signage that incorporated their anniversary while emphasizing the overall theme of F1 racing. The interlocking system of racetrack-related icons was not only visually appealing, but also highlights Sabre and their tent sponsors. Miller printed individualized name badges for each attendee, custom table toppers, and banners that displayed sponsor logos throughout the tent. We also had the pleasure of Sabre inviting Miller IDS’ employees to join the event! Our accounting manager, Kim Hilscher and her husband, as well as our technology sales and service manager, Jeff Stewart, enjoyed the Sabre Commercial tent too!
