December Artist of the Month: March Mattingly

March Mattingly has been painting and drawing since she could pick up a pencil. As a child, March was fascinated by colors and patterns in nature. She spent a lot of time outdoors exploring nature and collecting piles of acorns, rocks, pretty leaves and anything that caught her eye. March’s artwork themes are mainly of nature: landscapes, flora and fauna. “We are a part of nature and it is a part of us.”

March graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), with a concentration in Studio Art/Painting and Drawing. She works in a variety of media: oils or acrylics on canvas, charcoal, graphite, oil pastels and chalk pastels. She especially prefers using palette knives and brushes to apply thick, textured oil paint to canvas.

“My paintings and pastels are colorful and expressionistic, reflecting our perspective of and interaction with favorite places and subject matter; in the context of physical places, emotional states of mind, or a point in time that we cherish from our own, unique, individual journey that we all make on this earth. My paintings express self-awareness, personal and community accountability, the beauty of nature and the complex relationships between humans and the natural world.”

March works in several different series with different themes: tropical, sea life, cactus, abstracts, Nordic landscapes, hill country landscapes, animals and Austin night skyline cityscapes. Her tropical and sea life paintings have been inspired by travels to Hawaii, Cancun and Port Aransas, Texas. Her mountain and hill country paintings and pastels reflect her visual experience of living in Norway and subsequent visits there, as well as living in the Texas Hill Country.

“I have been going to Miller IDS since 1974. I first bought art supplies there and since, have used only Miller IDS for imaging and printing services. The reproduction is stellar, and I recommend Miller to all of my artist friends as ‘the only reproduction company that you will want to use, the best ever.’ Dana is incredible and produces gorgeous prints where it is hard to tell difference between the print and the original. She is also wonderful and pleasant to work with. Her skills with color and her fine attention to detail in the scanning and printing process are unmatched. I have never even considered using another print company. A number of my artist friends have told me that they started going to Miller IDS and were extremely happy with the results. I feel like Miller IDS is my print family and I feel fortunate to have them as a very important reproduction resource.”
